A Memorable Night…
A few Months Later…
[ Holden and Gwen have been happily dating. Both their families know about the newest development in their long-term relationship, and, frankly, they couldn't be more thrilled!
"It's about time!" Holden's dad had said, punching his son's shoulder playfully!
Holden swept Gwen off her feet everyday, whether they were lounging on the couch at home, or going out somewhere great. The transition couldn't be more natural, really.
If you remember, Holden had bought a specific piece of pricey jewelry a while back, saving it for the day when he would ask Gwen that all-important question.
Well, having known each other for more than 10 years now, and being madly in love, that day came sooner, rather than later... ]
Holden got home from work exactly on time that day. He was eager to get dressed in his best, and pick Gwen up for a night out on the town, dining under the stars on the dim-lit patio at The Little Corsican Bistro, right next to her beloved art museum.
Holden put on his impecably clean suit, the only piece of formal wear that he owned, and had only worn once, to his cousins wedding three years ago. It was still crisp, ironed and ready to go, and when Holden put it on, fixed his hair, and cleaned up a bit, he finally felt like he was truley prepared for the big night.
He had told Gwen to be ready for a romantic evening, and she, of course, had happily complied! Holden had been making all the right moves, and she was eager to see what he would come up with next! She slipped into her form-fitted, satin red halter dress, and dressed her neck with a multi-stranded necklace of moonstones, and matching earrings. She wanted to shimmer under the stars!
Holden walked Gwen to the new car that they had bought together, out by the new garage that they had built, in addition to their side-yard patio!
He drove her to The Little Corsican Bistro, the most sophisticated (and expensive!) resteraunt in town! People only went here on very special occassions!
“Oh, Holdy! You didn’t! You made reservations at The Corsican! You know I’ve never been here, but every one say’s they are spectacular!” Gwen gushed!
She couldn’t believe her luck! What a lovely date! How many weeks had Holden saved his pay to take her here? She was so lucky!
She gave him a kiss, and Holden blushed! They walked in and placed their order, and then went to sit under the old streetlamps on the patio, under the stars. It was too nice a night to sit indoors, plus, Holden wanted them to be alone when he asked her his question!
“This smells absolutley delicious!” Gwen gushed again, on cloud 9 siince they had parked outside of the resteraunt. Everything was just so perfect!
“Well lets pick a table so we can eat!” Holden said, smiling all the while. Gwen looked breathtaking tonight! He couldn’t tell if she knew what was about to happen, but he could tell that she was thrilled just the same with their date, and that gave Holden more confidence.
Holden and Gwen talked excitedly throughout the evening. They ate slowly, both wanting to draw out their enjoyment with the meal, and each other, as long as possible. Every so often they would just look at each other longingly, basking in what they had found in each other.
Holden could never picture being with anyone other than Gwen for the rest of his life. And he knew now that she felt exactly the same way about him. It was this understanding that had given him what he needed inside to put himself out on a ledge, more than ever before, and ask her that question as old as time; he was almost completley sure that she would say yes, but understandably, he was still very nervous.
If she said no, then he would be happy to ask her again and again every day after that, for the rest of their lives, hoping she would say yes. Or, he would resign and become a reclusive bachelor-writer. Either one or the other!
“Gwen, I said it before, but I’ll say it again; You are so heavenly tonight. You have never looked more beautiful!” Holden said after the two had finished their meal.
“Oh, thank you baby! And it’s all for you!” Gwen said, and the two shared a powerful, perfect kiss!
”My life is for you” Holden told her, and that only made them kiss longer!
When Holden and Gwen came to a pause, Holden began to say what he had went over in his head a million times before tonight, trying to perfect.
“Speaking of my life, and your life, our lives… ” He paused, and took a deep breath.
Gwen could tell he was getting prepared to say something very important, by the look in his eyes, his posture, and his Holden Wozny Trademark “deep breath”! This made her take a deep breath as well!
“Gwen, I have tried to tell you, and show you, every single day of my life how much I adore you, and how wonderful you are. At this moment, I wish I could just put on repeat all of those moments so that I could tell you again, but that wouldn’t do you justice,” He said.
Gwen’s head was spinning, as she listened to his words. Talk about Cloud 9!
“Looking at you tonight only makes me even more thankful that I am your man, and your friend. Gwen, tonight’s dinner is what I hope and pray is the first of many moonlit dinners with you. I want to spend every evening of the rest of my life with you.”
Holden began to lean in for the grande finale, and Gwen almost thought that he was finished, and was only going to kiss her. She started to sower, dissapointed at the anti-climactic speech. But she was wrong, Holden was only faking her out, to keep her on her toes until the last moment. He had purposely planned every part of this crucial moment out!
As he leaned in, he suddenly put one foot back, and knelt down! This made Gwen’s heart skip a beat, and for a moment she felt like laughing and crying all at once! Then, Holden spoke:
”Gwendoly Glover, I can remember clear as day the moment you came into my life, the summer of 4th grade. I remember the sights, the smells, and every word you said, just like a movie in my mind. Now we have come this far, and I want nothing more than to be the man that makes you blissfully happy for the rest of your life…” Holden said.
“Will you do me the honor, of becoming my wife?” Holden asked Gwen.
It was here that Gwen was more nervous and giddy than she had ever been in her entire life. Holden opened the black velvet box and revealed a rather large, sparkling, diamond on a band of smaller diamonds. Gwen covered her mouth and screamed with excitement! Her perfect man had just proposed to her with the perfect ring!
“Holdy, you could have given me a piece of string in a box, and I would have said yes. Yes, Yes, Yes!” she cried, jumping up and down.
Holden laughed. “Oh, then should I return it?” he asked slyly.
“Not a chance, Holden Wozny! Now please, put it on my finger!” Gwen said, crying happy tears. “I want to be your Mrs. Wozny!”
Holden slid the ring on Gwen’s finger, saying slowly in his head “I now pronounce you, Mr. and Mrs. Holden Wozny”
“Oh, My, God!” Gwen screamed so loud that everyone in Riverview probably heard her. It was her moment, so she did not care if she woke the neighbors!
Gwen and Holden, in an almost dream-like state of incredible happiness, drove home to their home together, the home that they would share for the rest of their lives. The home that they would raise their babies in!
Gwen couldn’t wait to call her parent’s, and her sister Penny, and tell them! Holden couldn’t wait to start picking out a honeymoon spot!
But right now, in that moment, there was only one thing on Gwen and Holden’s list of things to do, and that was to celebrate!
And so they did!
